What's really in your skincare — and why it matters more than you think.

There's a word that appears on nearly every conventional skincare product — and most "natural" ones too. It's one of the most deceptive words in the beauty industry.

Fragrance.

Or parfum, or "natural fragrance," or "essential oil blend." Whatever it's called, it's often a catch-all term that can legally hide hundreds of individual chemical compounds behind a single ingredient listing. In the United States, fragrance formulas are considered trade secrets — manufacturers are not required to disclose what's actually in them.

What's hiding in there? Frequently: phthalates, synthetic musks, aldehydes, and other compounds that your body doesn't recognize as food — and treats as a threat.

This post is about what that means for your skin, your hormones, and your overall health. And why at Magnolia Crow, we don't use any of it.


What Are Endocrine Disruptors?

Your endocrine system is your body's hormonal communication network — a sophisticated web of glands and chemical messengers that regulate everything from your mood and energy levels to your metabolism, immune function, reproductive health, and skin behavior.

Endocrine disruptors are chemicals that interfere with this system. They do this by:

  • Mimicking hormones — binding to hormone receptors and triggering responses your body didn't ask for
  • Blocking hormones — preventing your natural hormones from doing their job
  • Altering hormone production — disrupting how your body makes or breaks down hormones

The particularly insidious thing about endocrine disruptors is that they don't follow normal dose-response rules. Tiny amounts — parts per billion — can have significant biological effects. Your hormonal system is extraordinarily sensitive. It was designed to respond to minute signals. An endocrine disruptor exploits exactly that sensitivity.

And you may be applying them to your skin every single morning.


The Fragrance Problem

Synthetic fragrance is the most widespread source of endocrine-disrupting chemicals in personal care products. The compounds most commonly found include:

Phthalates — used to make fragrance last longer on skin. Classified as endocrine disruptors with particular effects on reproductive hormones. Linked to reduced testosterone, altered estrogen signaling, and developmental issues. Found in the majority of fragranced personal care products tested in independent studies.

Synthetic musks — used to create that warm, clean, lingering scent. Accumulate in body fat and breast milk. Some have been shown to interfere with estrogen signaling and are suspected carcinogens.

Aldehydes — common fragrance compounds that are known skin sensitizers and potential hormone disruptors.

Benzophenones — UV stabilizers used in some fragranced products. Classified as possible endocrine disruptors and carcinogens.

The legal loophole is the problem. Because fragrance formulas are protected as trade secrets, a product can list "fragrance" as a single ingredient while containing dozens of individual chemicals — none of which you, your doctor, or your dermatologist can identify from the label.

Even products marketed as "unscented" sometimes contain masking fragrances — synthetic compounds added to neutralize natural product odors — that never appear on the label.


"Natural Fragrance" Is Not the Answer

Here's where it gets complicated — and where we diverge from most of the "natural" skincare market.

"Natural fragrance" is a marketing term, not a safety standard. It typically refers to fragrance compounds derived from natural sources — but the extraction and processing methods can produce compounds just as irritating and potentially disruptive as their synthetic counterparts.

Many naturally-derived fragrance compounds are known skin sensitizers — meaning repeated exposure can trigger sensitization, where your immune system begins to react to the compound as an allergen. Once sensitized, even tiny exposures can trigger inflammatory responses. This is one of the most common causes of "suddenly" developing reactions to products you've used for years.

At Magnolia Crow, we use pure essential oils — not fragrance, not natural fragrance, not fragrance compounds. Essential oils are the whole, steam-distilled or cold-pressed botanical extracts. They're complex, living chemistry — not isolated fragrance molecules. They behave differently in the body, and their effects are far better understood.

And in our No Bull line — for babies, pets, and very sensitive skin — we use no scent at all. Zero. Because even pure essential oils can be triggers for some people, and we'd rather offer nothing than something that causes harm.


The Preservative and Emulsifier Problem

Fragrance isn't the only category of concern. Two other ingredient classes deserve attention — and both are nearly universal in conventional skincare, and common even in "natural" brands.

Emulsifiers are ingredients that allow water and oil to mix — essential in any water-based lotion, cream, or serum. Common emulsifiers include polysorbates, PEG compounds, cetearyl alcohol blends, and various synthetic glycols. Many are derived from petroleum. Some are known skin irritants. Several have been linked to gut microbiome disruption when absorbed through the skin — your gut and skin are more connected than most people realize.

Preservatives are required in any product that contains water — because water is a breeding ground for bacteria, mold, and yeast. Common preservatives include parabens (estrogen mimickers), phenoxyethanol (a skin and nervous system irritant), formaldehyde-releasing compounds, and benzyl alcohol. Even "natural" preservatives like sodium benzoate can form harmful compounds in certain conditions.

Here's what most people don't know: we don't use emulsifiers or preservatives at all — because we don't make products that need them.

Our entire line is anhydrous — water-free. No water means no bacterial growth. No bacterial growth means no preservatives needed. No water-oil mixing means no emulsifiers needed. The result is a simpler, cleaner formula with a longer shelf life and nothing your body has to figure out what to do with.

This isn't an accident or a limitation. It's a deliberate philosophy.


Why We Avoid Plastic Packaging

The endocrine disruption conversation doesn't end with what's in your products. It extends to what your products are stored in.

Plastics — particularly soft, flexible plastics — can leach compounds including BPA, BPS, and various phthalates into the products they contain. This leaching accelerates with heat, UV exposure, and contact with oils — all of which are common in skincare packaging sitting on a bathroom shelf or in a car.

This is why we use glass jars wherever possible. Glass is inert. It doesn't react with our ingredients, doesn't leach, and doesn't add anything to what you're putting on your skin. The added cost is worth it — and we'd rather absorb that cost than pass chemical contamination along to you.

Even our tubes and sticks are chosen carefully. We're not perfect — some packaging solutions require plastic — but we minimize it wherever we can and continue looking for better options as they become available.


The Bigger Picture: Hormones, Skin, and Everything Else

This is the part of the conversation that often surprises people.

Hormonal disruption from daily chemical exposure doesn't just affect your skin. Your endocrine system regulates virtually everything — and when it's confused, the effects ripple outward:

Skin — hormone disruption can trigger acne, eczema flares, rosacea, unexplained sensitivity, and premature aging. Your skin is often the first place hormonal imbalance shows up.

Mood — estrogen, progesterone, cortisol, and thyroid hormones all profoundly affect mood and mental health. Subtle disruption of these systems can contribute to anxiety, depression, irritability, and brain fog. Kings, yes this affects you as well.

Gut health — the gut-skin-hormone axis is real and bidirectional. Endocrine-disrupting chemicals absorbed through the skin can alter gut microbiome composition, contributing to digestive issues, inflammation, and immune dysregulation.

Energy levels — thyroid and adrenal hormones regulate metabolism and energy production. Disruption of these systems — even subtly — can contribute to fatigue, weight changes, and temperature dysregulation.

Reproductive health — phthalates and other endocrine disruptors have been linked to fertility issues, menstrual irregularities, and developmental concerns.

It doesn't take much. These systems are sensitive by design. Small, repeated exposures add up — and most people are exposed not just through skincare but through food packaging, cleaning products, fragranced candles, and air fresheners as well. Your skincare routine is one place where you have complete control.


What We Use Instead

At Magnolia Crow, every scented product uses only pure essential oils — steam-distilled or cold-pressed botanical extracts with known chemistry and well-documented safety profiles. We choose our essential oil blends for both their scent and their therapeutic properties.

Our unscented No Bull line uses nothing for scent at all — just the base ingredients, pure and simple.

No synthetic fragrance. No natural fragrance. No fragrance compounds. No emulsifiers. No preservatives. No petroleum-derived ingredients. No plastic contact with oil-based products where we can avoid it.

Just grass-fed tallow, organic botanicals, pure essential oils, and nothing else.

That's the whole philosophy. It's not complicated — it just requires saying no to a lot of things the industry considers standard.
