A contrarian take on sun safety — and a case for getting outside.

Let's talk about something that might make your dermatologist uncomfortable.

For the last several decades, we've been told that sun exposure is dangerous. Wear SPF every day. Cover up. Avoid peak hours. The message has been consistent, well-funded, and — we would argue — profoundly misguided.

Skin cancer rates have not declined since mass sunscreen adoption. In many categories, they've gone up. Meanwhile, vitamin D deficiency has become one of the most widespread nutritional problems in the developed world, linked to everything from depression and autoimmune disease to bone loss and cardiovascular problems.

We are avoiding the one thing our bodies were literally designed to need.

This post isn't about throwing caution to the wind. It's about understanding the nuance, reclaiming a healthy relationship with the sun, and making informed decisions about your own biology — rather than outsourcing that decision to an industry that profits from fear.


Vitamin D: The Only Vitamin Your Body Makes Itself

Here's something worth sitting with: of all the vitamins essential to human health, vitamin D is the only one your body manufactures on its own. Not from food. Not from supplements. From sunlight hitting your skin.

That's not an accident. That's biology telling you something important. The human body evolved over hundreds of thousands of years under the sun. Sunlight isn't a hazard to be managed — it's a fundamental input your body requires to function.

When UVB rays from the sun hit your skin, a chemical reaction converts cholesterol in your skin cells into vitamin D3 — the most bioavailable form. This process cannot be replicated by a pill with the same efficiency. Supplemental vitamin D helps, but it's a pale substitute for the real thing.

Vitamin D is involved in:

  • Immune system regulation — including cancer cell surveillance
  • Bone density and calcium absorption
  • Mood regulation and depression prevention
  • Cardiovascular health
  • Hormone production
  • Skin health and repair

The irony of slathering on SPF to prevent skin cancer while simultaneously blocking the vitamin D production that helps your immune system surveil and destroy abnormal cells is not lost on us.


The Sunscreen Paradox

Chemical sunscreens work by absorbing UV radiation and converting it to heat. Mineral sunblocks — like our Tallow Sun Stick — work differently, forming a physical barrier that reflects UV rays rather than absorbing them.

This distinction matters more than most people realize.

Sunscreen vs sunblock:

  • Sunscreen contains chemical filters (oxybenzone, avobenzone, octinoxate) that absorb UV and release it as heat. Many of these chemicals are endocrine disruptors — meaning they interfere with your hormonal system. Several have been found in blood, urine, and breast milk after topical application.
  • Sunblock uses mineral ingredients — zinc oxide and titanium dioxide — that sit on top of the skin and physically reflect UV rays. No chemical absorption, no hormonal disruption.

If you're going to use sun protection, mineral is the only option we'd recommend. It's what's in our Sun Stick — zinc oxide in a grass-fed tallow and beeswax base that nourishes your skin while providing a reasonable mineral barrier.

What SPF actually means:

SPF 30 doesn't mean you can stay in the sun 30 times longer without burning. It means that approximately 97% of UVB rays are blocked. SPF 50 blocks about 98%. The difference between SPF 30 and SPF 100 is less than 1% additional protection — a marketing number, not a meaningful safety upgrade.

More importantly, SPF only measures UVB protection — the rays responsible for burning. It says nothing about UVA rays, which penetrate more deeply and are associated with premature aging and certain skin cancers. Many chemical sunscreens offer poor UVA protection regardless of their SPF number.

And perhaps most importantly: daily full-body SPF application blocks the UVB rays your skin needs to produce vitamin D. You cannot make vitamin D through sunscreen. Full stop.


The Sunglasses Problem

This one surprises people.

Your skin's sun response — including its ability to produce melanin and build a protective tan — is partly regulated by light signals received through your eyes. Specifically, light hitting the retina communicates to the pineal gland, which signals the skin to prepare for and respond to UV exposure.

When you wear sunglasses, you block those light signals. Your skin doesn't get the "heads up" that sunlight is coming — and may respond more reactively, burning more easily than it would if your eyes had received the full light signal.

This doesn't mean you should never wear sunglasses — it means the reflexive, all-day sunglasses habit may be working against you in ways nobody talks about.


Morning Light: The Most Important Sun of the Day

Not all sunlight is created equal, and the time of day matters enormously.

Early morning sun — the hour or two after sunrise — is rich in infrared and red light wavelengths with relatively low UV intensity. This light does something critical: it resets your circadian rhythm. Morning sunlight hitting your eyes and skin signals your body that the day has begun, regulates cortisol, supports melatonin production for later that evening, and sets the biological clock that governs nearly every system in your body.

I personally start my day with this intentionally. A morning walk, eyes open to the sky, skin exposed when possible. The benefits are not subtle.

Conversely, artificial blue light from screens before bed sends the wrong signals — telling your body it's still midday, suppressing melatonin, and disrupting the sleep that is the foundation of everything else. The morning light practice and the evening screen boundary work together.


Solariums: When Hospitals Prescribed Sunshine

It wasn't always this way.

In the early 20th century, before antibiotics, sunlight was medicine. Hospitals built solariums — sun rooms — specifically to expose patients to natural light as part of treatment. Tuberculosis patients were sent to mountain sanatoriums for fresh air and sun. The practice of heliotherapy — deliberate therapeutic sun exposure — was mainstream medicine.

Swiss physician Auguste Rollier ran sun clinics in the Alps and documented remarkable results treating tuberculosis, lupus, and wound healing with controlled sunlight exposure. Florence Nightingale insisted on sunlit hospital wards. This was not fringe thinking — it was the scientific consensus of the time.

Then antibiotics arrived, pharmaceutical medicine took over, and the sun slowly transformed from healer to hazard in the medical narrative. The timing of sunscreen's rise as a mass product — and the simultaneous rise in vitamin D deficiency — is worth noticing.


Your Biology Is Unique

One of the most important things to understand about sun exposure is that there is no universal prescription. Your needs depend on:

  • Your skin tone — darker skin contains more melanin, which provides natural UV protection but also requires longer sun exposure to produce the same amount of vitamin D. Lighter skin burns more easily but produces vitamin D faster.
  • Your latitude and season — UVB rays are stronger closer to the equator and in summer months. In northern latitudes in winter, meaningful vitamin D production from sun may be nearly impossible regardless of exposure.
  • Your age — vitamin D synthesis decreases with age
  • Your health — compromised skin is more reactive. If you have active eczema, psoriasis, or very inflamed skin, build sun tolerance gradually.

Unhealthy skin burns more easily. This is important. If your skin barrier is compromised — stripped by harsh cleansers, synthetic ingredients, or chronic inflammation — it has less natural protection. One of the best things you can do for your sun tolerance over time is nourish your skin barrier. Which, conveniently, is exactly what grass-fed tallow does.


Signs You've Had Enough

Finding your personal sun balance means knowing when to step back. Listen to your skin:

  • Pinkness or warmth that lingers after coming indoors — time to cover up or step inside
  • Tightness or pulling sensation on exposed skin
  • Fatigue or headache during or after sun exposure
  • Thirst that feels sudden — dehydration accelerates sun damage
  • Itching or prickling sensations on the skin
  • Eyes becoming sensitive or watery in the light

When any of these appear, it's your body communicating. A hat, some shade, or our Sun Stick applied to exposed areas gives you more time without crossing the line.


The Tanning Question

A tan is your skin's natural UV protection — melanin produced in response to sun exposure that provides a genuine, adaptive barrier against further damage. Gradual tanning through moderate, regular exposure is fundamentally different from burning.

Tanning beds are a different matter. The UV spectrum in most tanning beds is heavily weighted toward UVA — the deeper-penetrating rays — without the UVB that produces vitamin D or the infrared that provides the morning light benefits. We'd skip them.


Finding the Balance

My personal practice:

  • Morning light first thing — a walk outside, eyes to the sky, skin exposed when the season allows
  • Intentional sun time when possible — gradual, moderate, paying attention to her skin's response
  • Sun Stick on the face and shoulders for prolonged or intense exposure — mineral zinc oxide protection without blocking everything or absorbing chemicals through her skin
  • Hats often — especially midday when UV is strongest
  • Sunglasses almost never — trusting her eyes to receive the light signals her skin needs

The goal isn't maximum sun exposure. It's a thoughtful, informed relationship with something your body genuinely needs — approached with the same intention you'd bring to any other aspect of your health.

Sunlight is not the enemy. Fear of sunlight is.
