CeraVe & Aquaphor vs Tallow: What Your Eczema Skin Actually Needs

CeraVe & Aquaphor vs Tallow: What Your Eczema Skin Actually Needs

Why the drugstore staples work — and why grass-fed tallow works better.

If you have eczema, you've probably been handed (or recommended) a tube of CeraVe or Aquaphor at some point. Maybe by a dermatologist, maybe by a well-meaning friend, maybe you just grabbed it yourself because it was there and your skin was on fire.

And maybe it helped. A little. For a while.

But here you are, still searching.

Let's talk about why — and what your skin is actually asking for.

What CeraVe and Aquaphor Are Doing

To be fair, these aren't bad products. They're formulated thoughtfully and they do what they claim to do. Understanding how they work helps us understand why they fall short for a lot of eczema skin.

CeraVe is built around ceramides — lipids that occur naturally in your skin barrier. The idea is solid: eczema skin is often ceramide-deficient, so replenishing them should help repair the barrier. And it does, to a degree. The problem is that synthetic ceramides are lab-derived and delivered in a base of water, emulsifiers, and preservatives — including ingredients like sodium hydroxide, carbomer, and phenoxyethanol that can irritate already reactive skin.

The water base is the bigger issue. Water-based moisturizers evaporate. Your skin gets a hit of hydration and then — within an hour or two — it's gone. For eczema skin that's struggling to hold moisture in the first place, you're on a hamster wheel of reapplication.

Aquaphor takes a different approach — it's an occlusive, meaning it sits on top of your skin and seals moisture in rather than adding it. The main ingredient is petrolatum, which is derived from petroleum. It creates an effective barrier but it's completely inert — it doesn't nourish, it doesn't repair, it just seals. And for some people, that petroleum base is a trigger in itself.

Neither one is feeding your skin what it needs to actually heal.

What Eczema Skin Is Really Asking For

Eczema isn't just dry skin. It's a compromised skin barrier that can't protect itself, regulate moisture, or calm inflammation the way healthy skin does. What it needs isn't just moisture — it's:

  • Biocompatible fats that integrate with the skin barrier rather than sitting on top of it
  • Anti-inflammatory support to calm the underlying reaction
  • A breathable barrier that protects without suffocating
  • Nutrients that support skin cell repair and regeneration

This is exactly what a well-formulated tallow balm delivers — and why so many eczema sufferers find their way to tallow after years of conventional products failing them.

Why the Magnolia Crow Body Balm Works Differently

Every ingredient in our body balm has a specific job. Nothing is filler.

Grass-fed beef tallow is the foundation — and the most important ingredient. Tallow's lipid profile is remarkably similar to human sebum, the oil your skin produces naturally. This means it doesn't just sit on your skin — it integrates with your barrier, absorbs completely, and delivers fat-soluble vitamins A, D, E, and K directly where your skin needs them. Vitamin A supports cell turnover. Vitamin D is anti-inflammatory. Vitamin E is a powerful antioxidant. Vitamin K supports healing.

For eczema skin, this biocompatibility is everything. Your skin barrier recognizes tallow and knows exactly what to do with it.

Organic cold-pressed castor oil is the anti-inflammatory powerhouse of this formula. Rich in ricinoleic acid, castor oil has been studied for its ability to reduce inflammation, calm reactive skin, and support the healing process. Combined with tallow, it creates a deeply nourishing base that addresses the inflammation driving the eczema cycle — not just the symptom of dryness.

Organic beeswax creates a protective barrier that does what Aquaphor does — but better. It seals moisture in and protects the skin from environmental triggers without petrolatum, without petroleum byproducts, and without suffocating the skin. Beeswax is breathable. It's also naturally antimicrobial, which matters for eczema skin that's prone to secondary infection from scratching.

Organic cold-pressed sunflower oil is rich in linoleic acid — a fatty acid that eczema skin is specifically deficient in. Studies have shown that applying linoleic acid topically can help restore the skin barrier in eczema-prone skin. It's also lightweight and deeply anti-inflammatory, helping to calm redness and irritation without heaviness.

Organic arrowroot powder keeps the formula feeling velvety rather than greasy, absorbs excess moisture, and has natural soothing and anti-inflammatory properties. It's one of the reasons our balm doesn't feel heavy or occlusive even though it's deeply nourishing.

The Real Difference

CeraVe manages eczema. Tallow nourishes and supports healing in the skin that has it.

One is a maintenance product — it keeps you comfortable enough to get through the day. The other is actually feeding your skin barrier the building blocks it needs to function better over time.

We hear from eczema customers regularly — at the farmers market, in our reviews, in messages. The pattern is consistent: they tried everything, they found tallow, and within hours sometimes, their skin started behaving differently. Not just less dry — actually calmer, less reactive, more resilient.

We're not making medical claims. We're sharing what we observe and what the ingredient science supports.

Skin Health Is Inside Out

One more thing worth saying — because it's too important to leave out of this conversation.

Tallow is powerful. But it's not magic. And no amount of topical skincare will fully compensate for what's happening on the inside.

Chronic eczema, persistent inflammation, and reactive skin are often your body's way of communicating something deeper. The skin is your largest detox organ — when your gut microbiome is out of balance, when your liver is overburdened, when your diet is high in inflammatory foods, your skin is frequently the first place it shows up.

We say it plainly: you can't tallow your way out of a junk food diet.

If your eczema is stubborn or cyclical, it's worth looking at:

  • Gut health — dysbiosis and leaky gut are strongly linked to eczema and inflammatory skin conditions
  • Liver function — the liver processes toxins that can manifest as skin inflammation when overburdened
  • Diet — refined sugars, seed oils, ultra-processed foods, and common allergens like gluten and dairy are frequent eczema triggers
  • Stress — cortisol is profoundly inflammatory and shows up on skin

Our products support your skin barrier from the outside. What you eat, how you sleep, and how you manage stress support it from the inside. True skin health is both.

Skin health is inside out. Start with what you put on it. Then look at what you put in you.

Safe for Baby Too

Eczema doesn't only affect adults. Baby eczema is incredibly common and heartbreaking to watch — and the options available to parents are often the same petroleum-based products that fall short for adults, or steroid creams that parents understandably want to avoid long term.

Our No Bull unscented balm is pure enough for the most delicate baby skin. No essential oils — full stop. This is non-negotiable for babies and young children, as even natural essential oils can be too stimulating for developing systems and reactive skin.

What you get instead is the simplest, purest version of the formula: grass-fed tallow, castor oil, sunflower oil, beeswax, and arrowroot. Nothing else. No fragrance, no essential oils, no synthetic ingredients of any kind.

Many of our customers use the No Bull balm for baby eczema, diaper rash, dry patches, sunburn and cradle cap. It's gentle enough for daily use on newborns and effective enough to actually make a difference.

If you're buying for a baby or young child: always choose No Bull. No exceptions. Essential oils are not safe for babies and very young children regardless of how natural they are.

Where to Start

If you have eczema or very reactive skin, always start with our No Bull unscented balm. Essential oils, even natural ones, can be a trigger for sensitive skin. Strip everything back to the purest formula first and give your skin up to two to four weeks to respond.

Our Tallow Body Balm is available in four scents and one completely unscented (No Bull). If you're not sure where to start, visit our eczema skin page and we'll help you find the right fit.

And if you have questions — come find us at the farmers market. We love talking skin.
